Bamboo to most people in the West is a great screening plant but one you’ve got to watch out for in your garden in case it takes over. It’s only recently becoming a more accepted raw material, particularly in fashion.
In many Asian countries, it is visibly present, as scaffolding (its tensile strength surpasses that of steel) and as a raw material used for many household items – traditionally for paper production.
As a fabric, not only is it naturally antibacterial (like coconut) it wicks moisture (eg sweat) which helps to keep you cool if it is used as a clothing fabric. Like wool, it is a natural insulator which keeps you cool when you need to be cool and warm when you need to be warm so it’s a great cross-seasonal addition to your wardrobe. Additionally, it feels incredibly soft and comfortable.
Other benefits are that it is naturally UV resistant, hypoallergenic and breathable making it an ideal natural fabric for use in our clothing.
As a raw material, bamboo is one of the fastest growing and most dense plants which makes it a very sustainable alternative to say cotton (which is the opposite as well as very labour intensive to harvest).
Long story short, bamboo clothing is my favourite. I am a person that runs quite hot in terms of temperature, probably as a result of both breastfeeding and a naturally high metabolism. Either way, I prefer to wear natural materials as they feel so much better on the skin.
Enter 02Wear, Australia’s Bamboo Clothing retailer. In my opinion, it trumps all others because I love wearing basics and highlighting them with accessories. These clothes are extremely versatile which helps with a capsule wardrobe or if you come down with a case of Kondo-itis.
A few years back I bought a grey long sleeped scoop neck from these guys and it got me through two pregnancies and still bounced back to it’s original shape with minimal care. Even today it looks brand new. Here I am modelling it in Bath, England in the freezing cold at eight and a half months pregnant.
